The Cascades

Vanuatu’s Mele Cascades Waterfall is arguably the archipelago’s most famous attraction from day-trippers on cruise ships to the occasional wonderer, it appears everyone aims to catch a glimpse of these majestic falls.

Tranquil turquoise pools of fresh water engulf the winding path as you navigate your way upwards, through tropical bushlands following the sounds of faraway falling water.  Over areas where streams win the battle with the dirt track, and the occasional stubborn tree which won’t move off the path.

Overall, it’s an easy walk, though humidity and stifling temperatures in summer may make it a slightly challenging 15 minutes.  But it’s worth it to get to the top, make sure you take a high pressured shower under the waterfall’s sprays, and keep an eye out for the little hidden cave at the back of one of the drops.

Allow at least an hour and a half to view the waterfalls, and prepare to bring your bathers, or even better, pop them on before you leave the hotel.  The Mele Cascades are a series of tributaries that flow from the to top the bottom, so feel free to jump in where ever takes your fancy.

For a more guided tour of the waterfalls, Mele Cascades tours from Evergreen are very flexible walking tours of the area.  100% locally owned and operated, the owners of Evergreen are the actual landowners of the 15 hectares around the waterfall, so travellers are sure to receive an authentic experience.

Turning ten next year, Evergreen is currently laying down a new gravel and concrete walkway to replace the dirt track which used to become quite slippery when wet.  Additionally little shacks are being putting up throughout September for new changing and bathroom facilities.

For those who wish to go the self-touring option, grab a bus or taxi and make sure you’re carrying VUV1000 (AU$15) per person, most taxi drivers will wait if you wish to negotiate a fee, or simply wait around for the next bus when you finish.
